This is our second Christmas without Mom.

While last year it was too painful to reflect upon the impact her loss had on our family, this year I was able to put some thought into it and write a short. There was nothing that Mom loved more than her grandchildren and they doted on her as well. My middle son Morgan (8 years old) and I shot on 5 separate days for lighting consistency throughout the story (the edit and sound design was another week in the making). It was cathartic for both of us to shoot the film and feel the motivating force behind it.

I originally intended to only show this film privately to family and friends. But I was encouraged by a colleague to make it public… of course upon doing so I needed a license for the music. Special thanks to Nan Wilson and Wieden+Kennedy for the license.

Testing the Glidecam with my race team (Kelly Benefits Strategies/ LSV). This is a mix of clips throughout the day. Congratulations to Rick on his win!

This is a fantastic BTS video that was created by Franklin Fitzgerald for a webisode of the show “Jen the body painter”.  It features a shoot I did in my studio to create the image “China Doll”.  Special thanks to F J Hughes & Grant Gibson.

Here is something very personal and close to my heart.  My favorite subjects, my three sons, and I created a Valentine’s Day video for my wife.  It worked, she cried, I didn’t spend a million dollars on roses this year, and we all had a great time eating chocolate strawberries and sparkling apple cider.

My Valentine’s

Every year the creation of my Chrismas card seems to take on a life of it’s own. 2010 did not dissapoint. The project spanned two weeks from the start of pre-production to the finish of retouching. It entailed two days of pre-pro (locaiton scouting, prop shopping, wardrobe research/rental, & casting), three separate shoots, a day going through my catalogs of previously shot photographs for images to be used in the composite, and 15 hours of retouching.

T-bone: final

I have shot my fair share of strange things, but this one has to be near the top of the list… yep, that’s a porterhouse steak we’re nailing to a telephone pole.

As I type this the FedEx crew is busy delivering “Tree People” boxes to 300 lucky recipients.  The recipients are carefully selected Art Buyers, Art Directors, Creative Directors, and Photo Editors at agencies and magazines around the country.  The phones have already been ringing in response!

The promotional piece is a slide lid wooden (Cedar) box that contains eleven 8×12 fine art custom prints that I made personally (3300 in total).  The images are wrapped with a canvas strap (that I printed) and they are interleaved with glassine sheets.  Also accompanying the images is a note from the artist that read as follows:

It was a place for play, adventure, and escape. It was a place of secrets, mysteries, and wisdom. It was a place as big as one young boy’s imagination.

The place was the woods. And I was that boy.

The woods, of course, still exist. Yet, unlike me, they’ve not seemed to age a bit.  They hold all the same magic, all the same intrigue they once did. Tree People isa collection of images of trees throughout America.  Some are incredibly unique.  Some extremely rare. All amazing. In addition to the trees, I’ve featured body-painted models that become an extension of the environment, but also an extension of reality—much like the extended reality that consumed me as a child in the woods.

I’ve assembled many collections in my years as a professional photographer, but Tree People is particularly dear to me. It represents more than my photographic skills. It represents my love of the woods, then and now.

Tree People is special, as well, in that what you’re holding is one of only 300.  Each photograph is a giclee print that I personally printed on Exhibition Fiber Paper.

I hope you enjoy Tree People as I much as I enjoyed creating it.
